Extractions
Gentle Care For a Healthier Smile
The thought of a tooth extraction can be daunting for many patients. That’s why our priority is to provide compassionate, gentle care to make the process as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
What Are Tooth Extractions?
Tooth extractions involve removing a tooth from its socket in the bone. This procedure is typically performed when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or causing other dental problems that cannot be resolved through other treatments.
When is Extraction Necessary?
There are several reasons why you might need a tooth extracted, such as:
- Severe decay or damage
- Impacted teeth
- Overcrowding
- Infection
- Gum disease
What is the Process of Extracting a Tooth?
Our tooth extractions are performed in one sitting but require several steps:
- Initial Consultation: Dr Samuel will conduct a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess the condition of the tooth and determine the best course of action.
- Anaesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we use local anaesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. Sedation options are available for more complex extractions or patients with dental anxiety.
- Extraction: Once the area is numb, Dr Samuel will carefully remove the tooth. Simple extractions involve loosening the tooth with an instrument called an elevator before removing it with forceps. Surgical extractions, which are required for impacted teeth or teeth that have broken off at the gum line, involve making an incision in the gum and may require removing some bone around the tooth.
- Post-Extraction Care: After the extraction, Dr Samuel will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to help manage pain, reduce swelling, and promote healing. This may include recommendations for pain relief, eating soft foods, and avoiding certain activities.
How Long Does Recovery Take After a Tooth Extraction?
Recovery time can vary depending on the complexity of the extraction and your individual healing process. Generally, it takes a few days to a week for the initial healing. Dr Samuel will provide you with specific instructions to follow during your recovery, including:
- Managing pain with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications
- Applying an ice pack to reduce swelling
- Keeping the extraction site clean by gently rinsing with warm salt water
- Sticking to soft foods and avoiding hot, spicy, or crunchy foods
- Avoiding straws and smoking
